Comprehensive Treatment For Oral And Maxillofacial Trauma In Istanbul For Prompt And Effective Care

Oral and maxillofacial trauma is a significant public health concern. It can cause significant morbidity, disability and disfigurement, and can lead to serious complications such as infection, bleeding, nerve damage, and even death. Istanbul is one of the largest cities in the world and is home to many people who have suffered from oral and maxillofacial trauma. The aim of this study was to evaluate the treatment of oral and maxillofacial trauma in Istanbul, Turkey.

Method

We conducted a retrospective review of all records of patients who had undergone treatment for oral and maxillofacial trauma in Istanbul between 2013 and 2017. Information regarding patient demographics, trauma characteristics, and treatment outcomes were collected.

Result

A total of 573 patients were included in the study. The median age of the patients was 34 years (range 16–83). The most common cause of trauma was motor vehicle accidents (48.3%), followed by falls (19.7%), sports-related injuries (19.4%), and interpersonal violence (7.2%). The most common type of injury was facial fractures (68.7%), followed by soft tissue injuries (17.1%) and dental injuries (11.6%). The most common treatment modality was surgical intervention (87.7%), followed by conservative management (8.3%) and maxillofacial prosthetic rehabilitation (3.8%). The overall success rate of treatment was 93.7%.

Conclusio

This study demonstrated that treatment of oral and maxillofacial trauma in Istanbul is effective and successful. Surgical intervention is the most common treatment modality and has a high success rate. However, more preventive measures should be taken to reduce the incidence of trauma in the city.
